FEBRUARY 2013    THEREMYNT    (Jan Richard and Eva Peel)

Jan, a former drummer in an indie-rock band, has progressively neglected the drums to devote himself to synths and machines. Eva Peel is a DJ, a singer, and works as a multimedia artist producing videos and images.

Together, they have created THEREMYNT, an electronic experimentation inspired by various musical trends such as krautrock, space disco, minimal wave and other progressive sounds.

Their first album, Space Control, came out on Neopren in 2012 and offers their vision of electronic music.

In 2012, the Theremynt project began a collaboration with French artist Yannick Dangin Leconte. Leconte worked on several videos for Eva and Jan, which can be seen on Theremynt's YouTube site.

From Wikipedia, about the Brain Cell project:

Brain Cell is a mail art project begun by Ryosuke Cohen in June 1985 .... Brain Cell is an art experiment in the vein of networked mail art, where a network expands from A, copied, forwarded and even returned to the originator. This produces a series of cybernetic cells, which can interact in a non-linear order. Brain Cell has enlisted over 6,000 contributors from 80 nations since 1985.

JULY 2013  THE SKETCHBOOK DRAWINGS OF ANNE-LAURE KOPEIKIN

This is about drawing the world around me, having an urgency to leave a trace ... in any possible way. A drawing begins by transcribing something I see around me, something i hear, feel, read... I extract the energy of my environnement. It's my mind food. The issue is not hyperrealism. I believe in the power of spontaneity...orgasmic and wild flashes. Some essence of humanity, a poetic way of considering life despite the chaos of our time.

As Dino Buzzati writes in the novel titled, "The Magician":  Stories we'll write, paintings we'll paint, music we'll compose, the stupid, insane, incompréhensible and useless things [...] will yet always be humanity's extreme spike, his authentic banner.

AUGUST 2013  THE PORTRAITS OF ESTONOLODIGO

Often using nothing more than colored pencils and Sharpie pens, Estonolodigo creates drawings on paper that evoke powerful and intimate emotions. "The look and feeling of the drawing is as important to me as the concept, if either doesn't come out right I toss it. Pencil and sharpie work for me right now. I don't feel so pressured using paper, I can start over, it's affordable."

Estonolodigo lives and works in the United States. See more of her work here: http://estonolodigo.wix.com/estonolodigo

SEPTEMBER 2013  THE COLLAGES OF SVENJA WAHL

It’s Paper Fate!

This month’s featured artist, Svenja Wahl of Germany, is a relative newcomer to creating collages for mail art. She recalls the very day -- June 23, 2011 -- when she read about a mail art meeting in San Francisco that was written up in a blog by a German journalist who was travelling abroad. Svenja knew instantly “I’m home”!

“I always loved to cut and glue paper together, to cover all my books and binders with collages. Then I forgot about it for more than 20 years.” Now working in the field of book publishing, Svenja quickly realized that mail art was a perfect fit for her. “My closets are full of postcards, paper, glue, pencils … and I finally know what to do with all the stuff.”

OCTOBER 2013  THE PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS OF ALEXANDRE GOMES VILAS BOAS

..... We live in society and to change it, we have to share. The exchange here is essential. We say here (in Brazil) that the mere fact that we have chosen to be artists is somehow a political decision... We are activists without being pamphleteers... Brazil has changed a lot but is still a country of great social inequalities. I think culture and art are some of the most valuable tools that humans have when it comes to making a difference in one's corner of the world...

...Many things interest me. I love painting but I understand that this modality has undergone transformation and does not fit the current time. Currently, I am bringing together word and drawing into three-dimensional hybrid Artist Books...

Several examples of Alexandre's Artist Books.

I finally went to Disneyland ... it was my childhood dream. I asked my father to take me there on multiple occasions, but he failed to do so. During my adolescence, the Disneyland dream was cornered inside my skull and collected dust over many years. At the age of 25, having forgotten those dreams, I was presented with the opportunity to finally go.
